It takes its name from the San people, who hollowed out its branches to make quivers for arrows. The largest concentrations grow in scattered forests near Keetmanshoop, standing alone across open desert in a way that gives a photograph real scale without a single other reference point in frame. The Enchanting Beauty of Deadvlei Trees Panoramic Photographs

Deep inside Namib-Naukluft National Park is Deadvlei — a white clay pan where centuries-old dead camel thorn trees stand against some of the tallest red sand dunes in the world, some reaching 200 meters. The trees died when a shift in the riverbed cut off their water supply; the Namib's dry climate has kept them from decomposing ever since, leaving sun-blackened skeletons that look almost carved rather than grown. The scale is what makes this location work as a panoramic photograph specifically — a standard frame can't hold both the emptiness of the clay pan and the dunes towering behind it. At sunrise and sunset, low light rakes across the white clay and throws the trees' shadows out long across the ground, and the changing light through the day reveals different patterns in the cracked mud underfoot.
