The Same Boulders, Traded For A Different Sky
The Moeraki Boulders, scattered along a stretch of beach on New Zealand`s South Island, are septarian concretions — mineral deposits that formed roughly 60 million years ago on what was then an ocean floor, growing outward in layers around a central core much the way a pearl accumulates around a grain of sand. Millions of years of coastal erosion have since stripped away the softer mudstone cliff that originally held them, leaving these near-perfect spheres, some over two meters across, exposed on open sand where the tide moves freely around them twice a day. Most photographs of the boulders are shot in daylight, when their internal cracked, honeycomb-like surface pattern is clearest. "A Throne Below" goes the other direction, framing the same formations after dark, under a sky largely free of the light pollution that would wash out fainter stars almost anywhere near a major city. New Zealand`s South Island, with its low population density and long stretches of undeveloped coastline, is genuinely one of the better places in the world for this kind of unaided night-sky photography — no artificial glow competing with the stars, just the boulders` pale curved surfaces catching whatever ambient light the sky itself provides.
