The Twelve Apostles: A Name That Was Never Quite Accurate
The Twelve Apostles, on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria`s Port Campbell National Park, have never actually numbered twelve. Records suggest there were nine limestone stacks when the site was renamed for tourism in the early 20th century — before that, it was known, less romantically, as the Sow and Piglets. Erosion has taken two more since: a 50-metre stack collapsed in July 2005, and another followed in 2009, leaving seven or eight standing today depending on how you count the smaller ones. The rock itself is 15 to 20 million years old — compressed marine sediment from when this stretch of coast was still ocean floor — but the individual stacks are a far more recent, temporary shape. The Southern Ocean cut caves into the old limestone cliffs, the caves widened into arches, and the arches eventually collapsed, leaving isolated pillars standing alone in the water. The same process that made the Apostles is still eroding their base today, at a rate of roughly two centimeters a year — meaning the exact shapes in this photograph won`t look quite the same in another few decades. "After The Storm" was shot in the aftermath of exactly that kind of weather — the conditions that speed up the erosion also happen to be the ones that make for the most dramatic photographs: mist still hanging over the water, waves still carrying more energy than usual, and a sky that hasn`t fully cleared.
