Why "Atlantis Falls"
The title isn`t literal — there`s no waterfall in this photograph. It`s a reference to how the tufa formations at Mono Lake look: shapes that spent most of their existence entirely underwater, only surfacing decades ago when the lake level dropped. There`s something genuinely submerged-city-like about standing among them — like walking through the ruins of somewhere that used to be underwater, which is exactly the feeling "Atlantis Falls" is named for. Mono Lake sits within California`s Eastern Sierra region — the dry, high-desert side of the Sierra Nevada, where the mountains give way to volcanic tablelands and ancient lakebeds rather than the greener forests most people associate with the range. It`s a genuinely different California than the coast or the redwoods, closer in feel to the Basin and Range country of Nevada than to San Francisco. Concentrated light hits the print, is held briefly in the silver crystals of the emulsion, and reflects back out — producing an image with real visual depth, almost as if it were lit from within.
The photograph is mounted to a rigid dibond backing plate and finished under Lexan or Perspex — a super-transparent, non-shattering, anti-glare acrylic. This acrylic layer is completely colorless and shows the print at its best.
