The Waterfall Iceland`s Hidden People Are Said To Call Home

Icelandic folklore holds that huldufólk — literally "hidden people" — live inside rocks, cliffs, and waterfalls across the country, invisible but present, watching over the landscape they inhabit. It`s not a belief confined to old stories: a 2023 University of Iceland survey found that 54 percent of respondents considered the existence of the huldufólk at least possible, with only about 27 percent ruling it out entirely — numbers that have stayed remarkably stable since similar surveys began in 1974. Roads in Iceland have genuinely been rerouted around boulders believed to be elf dwellings, and certain sites, waterfalls among them, are approached with a kind of quiet respect even by people who wouldn`t call themselves believers. Kirkjufellsfoss, the waterfall in this photograph, sits beneath Kirkjufell mountain on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula — a location already carrying enough mythic weight to have been used as the "Arrowhead Mountain" backdrop in HBO`s Game of Thrones. "Fairy Tale" leans into the older, homegrown version of that mythology instead, framing the falls the way local folklore has long described them: not just moving water, but a place where the hidden and visible worlds are said to sit closest together. Whether or not anyone actually believes hidden people live in the spray behind Kirkjufellsfoss, the waterfall itself needs no folklore to justify the name — this piece joins "Call" and "The Shine Of Elmo" as the third piece in this collection built around the same mountain and falls, each pulling from a different part of what makes the location so enduringly photographed.

Print Information:
Alexander Vershinin individually produces limited edition prints to museum-grade standards, on world-leading photographic paper. The Fujiflex Crystal Archive is an ultra-high-gloss, museum-grade photographic paper, with archival properties spanning over 70 years. Alexander also offers the trademarked printing and mounting process Lumachrome Gallery Deluxe, with archival properties spanning over 120 years. Both processes deliver exceptional sharpness, contrast, and color reproduction. Concentrated light hits the print, is held briefly in the silver crystals of the emulsion, and reflects back out — producing an image with real visual depth, almost as if it were lit from within. The photograph is mounted to a rigid dibond backing plate and finished under Lexan or Perspex — a super-transparent, non-shattering, anti-glare acrylic. This acrylic layer is completely colorless and shows the print at its best. It also blocks 98% of UV light and holds up well against weather, temperature, and humidity changes, which is a large part of what gives these pieces their long archival life. For a more classic, finished look, custom wooden Roma frames are also available. Each print is delivered with a signed Certificate of Authenticity, noting the work's title, edition number, and Alexander's original signature — a lasting record of provenance for your collection. Whichever you choose — an unframed print rolled in a hard tube, an acrylic face-mounted float, or a finished framed piece — you're getting a real, collectible piece of fine art photography, produced to the highest standard available.
