Karelia: Ancient Rock Polished By Glaciers, Not Rivers
Karelia, on Russia`s northwestern border with Finland, sits on some of the oldest exposed rock on Earth — part of the Baltic Shield, a geological formation between 1.5 and 3 billion years old. The region`s granite outcrops have a distinctive smooth, rounded shape locally nicknamed "ram`s foreheads," carved not by water but by the sheer weight of glaciers that once covered all of Northern Europe, grinding and polishing the stone as they moved and then retreated. That glacial history also explains Karelia`s other defining feature: more than 60,000 lakes and 27,000 rivers packed into a relatively small area, filling the hollows the retreating ice left behind. Roughly half the region is dense taiga — pine, spruce, and birch — earning Karelia the nickname "the lungs of Europe." "Feel The Frost" was shot on Karelia`s White Sea coast, where an abandoned house stands as the only sign of past habitation against that stripped-back winter landscape — bare geology, frozen water, and a structure slowly being reclaimed by the cold rather than by decay. It`s part of the same broader Russian North collection as work shot further north on the Kola Peninsula.
