Artist`s Tale:
When The Salt Flats Turn Into A Mirror
Most of the year, the Bonneville Salt Flats are bone dry — a hard, flat crust of mineral salt left behind when a prehistoric lake evaporated roughly 30,000 years ago. But after winter rain, a thin sheet of water can sit on top of that crust for weeks at a time, shallow enough to see the salt`s texture through it, still enough to turn the whole surface into a near-perfect mirror. That`s the specific, narrow window "Infinity" was shot in — sky and ground nearly identical in color, with only the dark line of a distant mountain range marking where one ends and the other begins. The flats sit within the same general stretch of Utah`s West Desert as the Utah Test and Training Range, where NASA`s Stardust sample-return capsule landed on January 15, 2006, after a seven-year journey to intercept comet Wild 2 and bring cometary dust back to Earth — a reminder that this particular stretch of Utah desert has a habit of attracting things that fall from very far away. This piece pairs with "Aztec Dreaming," shot at the same salt flats under dry conditions rather than after rain.Awards:
