Snow At Mesa Arch Is Rarer Than It Looks
Southeastern Utah`s high desert climate means Canyonlands National Park gets very little precipitation most of the year, and what snow does fall at this elevation tends to melt off within a day or two once the sun is out. "The Morning And The Frost" catches Mesa Arch in one of those brief windows — a dusting of snow still clinging to the sandstone before the desert sun burns it away, which is a genuinely uncommon condition to find at this specific arch compared to the clear, dry mornings most photographs of it show. That thin layer of white does something the more famous sunrise-glow shots of Mesa Arch can`t: it picks out every crack and ledge in the rock`s texture, turning the same orange sandstone into something closer to a relief map than a smooth curve. It`s a very different mood than either "Babylon," shot for the arch`s underglow effect at sunrise, or "Flash And Light," which frames the rock`s texture up close under warm color rather than under frost.Awards:
