Moeraki Boulders: 60-Million-Year-Old Spheres
The Moeraki Boulders, scattered along the beach near Moeraki on New Zealand`s South Island, are septarian concretions — hardened mineral deposits that formed roughly 60 million years ago on the seafloor, growing outward in layers around a core the same way a pearl grows around a grain of sand. Erosion has since exposed them from the cliff face they originally formed inside, leaving these near-perfect spheres, some over two meters across, sitting exposed on the open sand. This piece takes a tighter, more textural approach than a wide beach shot would — close enough that the boulder`s surface, water, and surrounding rock read as a single unified composition rather than a landmark photographed from a comfortable distance. It`s the first piece in this collection`s New Zealand series, and pairs with the collection`s Wanaka tree piece, shot on the same island under very different conditions.Print Information:

The photograph is mounted to a rigid dibond backing plate and finished under Lexan or Perspex — a super-transparent, non-shattering, anti-glare acrylic. This acrylic layer is completely colorless and shows the print at its best.
