Japanese Maple Tree or the famous Peter Lik Tree
This laceleaf Japanese maple grows in the Strolling Pond Garden at the Portland Japanese Garden, Oregon, planted around 1968. For decades it was simply one tree among many in the garden — until Peter Lik photographed it from directly beneath, looking straight up into its twisted, umbrella-like canopy, and titled the resulting print "Tree of Life." That image won first place at the 2011 Windland Smith Rice International Awards and was exhibited at the Smithsonian, and it`s widely credited with turning this specific tree into one of the most photographed in the world. "The Spiderweb" is this collection`s direct homage to that composition — the same upward angle, the same canopy of branches radiating outward against the sky like threads of a web. The tree draws a genuine crowd during its roughly two-week peak in October, when the leaves turn a deep scarlet and photographers line up before dawn to get a clear shot before the garden fills. The garden itself has strict rules around this particular tree specifically, including a ban on portrait photography beneath it, precisely because of how much foot traffic it now attracts. It pairs with "Magic Forest," the collection`s other piece shot at this same tree, which pulls back to show the maple within its wider garden setting rather than isolating the canopy the way "The Spiderweb" does.Print Information:
