Shooting The Milky Way From Inside A Slot Canyon
Most Antelope Canyon photography happens in daylight, when sunlight bouncing between the sandstone walls produces the warm, saturated color the canyon is famous for. "The Velvet Abyss" was shot after dark instead, which changes the entire technical problem a photographer is solving. Inside a narrow slot canyon, the strip of visible sky is a fraction of what it would be in open desert — sometimes just a thin ribbon far overhead — which means capturing the Milky Way here requires the canyon`s opening to line up with the galactic core at the right time of year, on a clear, moonless night, with almost none of the ambient light bounce that helps illuminate a wider landscape shot. Antelope Canyon is split into an Upper and Lower section, both on Navajo land near Page, Arizona, and both accessible only with a licensed Navajo guide — a requirement that applies even more strictly after dark, since navigating the canyon`s narrow, uneven floor without daylight is genuinely hazardous without someone who knows the terrain. Night tours are rarer and harder to book than the standard daytime visits most tourists take, which is part of why images like this one are less common than the classic sunbeam shots the canyon is more widely known for. Once the exposure is set, the canyon walls read almost black against the stars rather than their usual orange, with the sandstone`s texture reduced to silhouette.
